November 3, 2009 With his 323 yards on 20 carries Friday night at Quil Ceda Stadium in Marysville, Senior running back Austin Denton broke the Marysville Pilchuck career rushing record. The record had been set in 1996 by Kyle Woods with 1688 yards. Woods went on to have an outstanding baseball career at the University of Washington. Denton has now amassed 1919 yards on 165 carries with 24 touchdowns on the campaign. That's an eye popping 11.6 yards per carry. The 5'-11" 205 pound bruiser of a running back has ran for over 200 yards in 8 of the 9 contests this season. Last fall Denton was not projected as the starting running back, but an injury thrust him in to the lineup and he has not looked back since. Austin shredded defenses for 1565 yards on 196 carries and 18 touchdowns as a junior last year. He was a first team All-Wesco North selection at running back. Like Woods, Denton is also an accomplished baseball player. He was a first team All-Wesco North pick as a center fielder last spring for the Marysville- Pilchuck baseball squad. Austin spent most of his summer playing for the acclaimed Seattle select Stars summer legion baseball team. Denton has received some interest from smaller schools such as Portland State, Central Washington and Whittier College. He has left his options open for next year, with a good chance to play at the next level in either sport. First things first for this tough as nails back. His undefeated and #8 ranked Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks host Graham Kapowsin in a state play in game this weekend. He and fellow standout running back AJ Kvangnes will pace the Tommies vaunted ground game in playoff action. Good luck to Mr. Denton and the rest of the Marysville-Pilchuck squad this playoff season. |
