A has the ball in their frontcourt.

A1 attempts a pass to A2. The pass is deflected by B1, A2 jumps to get the ball and only taps it while also in the frontcourt. The ball is heading for the sideline in the frontcourt and is saved by A2, sending the ball into the backcourt where A1 gains possession.

BC violation or no BC violation? The official called a BC violation, which is most likely correct, but for some reason I had thought that the deflection by B1 caused A to no longer have team control, even though A2 tapped the ball.

BC violation.

Knocking the ball away does not end team control. Team control continues to exist until a shot is taken, the defense gains control of the ball or the ball becomes dead.

Got it. If A has control, control continues through any loose balls until it it shot, becomes dead, or is controlled by B.

Check: If A shoots and the ball bangs off the rim, team A can legally go into the backcourt, if necessary, to recover the ball with no penalty.

You are correct.

I'm sorry for running a dead horse into the ground, but I also need an explanation.

Say A1 is in the frontcourt, passes to A2, The pass is deflected to the backcourt by B1, but recovered by A2 in the backcourt. B1 never gained possession at all. I have seen this called over and back so many times,, but with the possession question, I never knew which is the correct call.

Thanks

If B1 is the last to touch the ball in the FC, then it's legal for A2 to recover the ball in the BC.

The problem is most people believe that once B1 touches the ball, A1 can recover it evern if it hits A before going into the BC. Not true.

The only thing that matters on a play like this is who LAST touches the ball in the FC. If it's A, then you've got a violation, no matter how many time B touched it before A LAST touched it in the FC.
