#3 Ferris vs. #1 Skyline (Sat) @ Tacoma Dome = It’s the rematch of last year’s state title game, but in many ways these teams are totally different in personality. Last year Ferris was using Connor Halliday (WSU) to sling it around and the defense was just an after thought. This year, the Ferris “D” is the reason they are undefeated and the first GSL school to go to back-to-back state championships since G-Prep went back-to-back-to-back (1985, ’86, ’87). Throughout the GSL season, this Saxon Group was dominating, smothering, & relentless. During this playoff run, as expected, teams have had some success, but just not enough to beat them on the scoreboard.

As for the Skyline Spartans, last year’s team was ruled by Jake Heaps (BYU) and a dominating defense. This year, despite the impressive #’s Soph QB #4 Max Browne has tossed up, they are still without their mass points producer Mr. Heaps and their shutdown defense. Unlike a year ago, this Skyline squad hasn’t been as dominate as the last few years. They had 4 games decided by 7pts or less along with an opening-day shootout loss to Liberty. But what they do have is the #4 Ranked WR in the country #3 Kasen Williams (83 catches, 1,538 yds, 22Td’s) who caught a huge 4th qtr 84yd TD pass to help them slip past Curtis 35-34. In last year’s state title game, Ferris had no answer for the future Husky Williams’ size (6’3, 220 lbs), strength, & speed as he torched the Saxon secondary for 4qtrs. Along with Williams, the Spartans have seen the emergence this year of Sr WR #21 Jordan Simone (6’, 185 lbs) as he caught 58 balls for 1,024yds & 15 TD’s. With that kind of talent out in the wings, no wonder why the 6-5, 200 lbs Browne’s ease into signal caller role has been so successful as he has notched 3,800+ passing yds with an eye-popping 48 Td’s.

When I look at handicapping this game, I think my fear that I have been saying all year about this Ferris offense will play-out. I have felt that in the end, they will run up against a team that can put points up on their stellar defense which will force their offense to make plays/put up points as well. We have got to see the last two weeks vs. Chiawana & B-Prep, that their great defense needed just enough offense to hold off late game charges deep in their own zone. But to win a state title, the offense has to pull their own weight for 4qtrs. I just don’t think Ferris can keep up with what Skyline puts up on the scoreboard in this one, despite possibly the best defense in the state attempting to do so on 4 days rest. Skyline 27 Ferris 17.

2B

Colfax vs. South Bend (Sat) @ Tacoma Dome = Last week Colfax got down 14-0, and stormed back in the snow at Martin Stadium to win 21-14. I think that wake up call was just what the coaches needed to focus them for the state title. Colfax 35 South Bend 14.

1B

Cusick vs. Lummi (Fri) @ Tacoma Dome = Cusick is too tested on defense due to the strength of play on the eastside of the mountains. Earlier this year, Lummi defeated Wellpinit 119-74. Cusick held Wellpinit to 16pts. Cusick 49 Lummi 28

I'd say Mead likes the list.

What they don't like is the fact their name is not on it yet.......3dGrin
