My take on
the Kingco 4A for 2003?
color:black"> Ballard may have several all-state picks on their 2003
roster. The Beavers have been building this powerhouse since middle school.
Keauntea Bankhead is the most highly recruited of the bunch and was recently
named the WashingtonPreps.com Preseason 4A Player of the Year. Bankhead is a
solid two-way player as a S/WR for the Beavers. Pitching to Bankhead will be
Verdana;color:black">Montana
recruit Cole Morgan. Morgan is a solid drop back passer, ideal for the
next level. If that’s not enough offense for you, J.T. Diederichs (WSU commit)
is the best back in the conference. The Beavs have enough weapons to light up
the scoreboard on anyone and if they have a weakness, it is on the defensive
side of the ball. Ballard’s season may rest on the outcome of their October 11
game with Bothell. The winner of that contest should enter the playoffs as the
number one seed from Kingco. Bothell was hit hard by graduation from
their 2002 state quarterfinal team. But the Cougars appear to have reloaded
with a solid core of players. Reports out of Montlake and Cheney had the
Bothell receiving core rated best in the state. With Zach Hekker and Travis
McKee as 6-5 targets on the outside, the Cougars will give opposing Corners
fits. In addition to McKee, the Cougars return several all conference players
on both sides of the ball. If Bankhead isn’t the best player in the state, then
he must be in the Green and White of Woodinville. Matt Tuiasosopo may
not have the drop back style of Cody Pickett but he is the Mike Vick of
Washington football. Just ask any of the defending state champs about number
5. He should be well protected with future Husky Casey Bulyca heading up a
massive offensive line. But the Falcons were hit harder then any other team by
graduation. There are huge question marks at the other skill positions and even
in the offensive line. Tui will keep them in the hunt for the title but the
guess here is that they won’t have enough other horses to climb over both
Bothell and Ballard. After what had to be the most disappointing season in
recent memory, Inglemoor looks to return to the form that made them the
terror of the league in the nineties. Jordan White-Frisbee will move inside
from TE to his college position (Tackle) and he should anchor a solid line with
Greg Brown and Papp Sinteppadon. Steve Anderson will be the
go-to guy in the Fly offense but there have to be big question marks about
whether or not the Vikings can put up enough points to compete with the Big
three. In a scheduling quirk, the Viks once again miss playing Redmond who will
be their chief competition for the last playoff spot in the league. Inglemoor
should know its playoff fate by week 6. Their first five weeks are as tough as
anyone in the state, facing Bothell in week one, Ballard in week three and
Woodinville in week five. For the Vikings to advance to the round of 32 they
will have to beat one of those three.
Verdana;color:black">Redmond
is counting on the strength of the league's top offensive line to return them to
the playoffs. Gone, is all Kingco RB Jon Williams and QB Mike Wagner. But FB
DeMarko Morris has been moved to TB and coach Eagle likes the transition. The
Mustang offense may take a while to jell and the schedule may actually help them
do that. The first half of the schedule is relatively easy with only the
Bothell contest in week two posing a threat. They face Woodinville in week 6,
Ballard week 9 and don’t play Inglemoor. The Mustangs could be poised for a
playoff run if they are sitting at 4-1 going into the Woodinville game. The
rest of the league is clearly a step below. On the plus side, Coach Laigo has
the Bulldogs moving in the right direction. Next year
Garfield
will replace Ballard as the top
font-family:Verdana;color:black">Seattle
school. Laigo has done a good job getting some of the state’s best athletes out
for football and the Dawgs will surprise a few Kingco teams this season. Keep
your eyes on Anthony Stewart and AJ Jimmerson. Although the Bulldogs best days
are a year or two away, don’t expect Franklin to win the annual turf war this
season. Coach Tramp has also breathed some new life into the Kangaroos.

10.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:black"> had two of the leagues best offensive
weapons in QB Ryan Staudacher and RB John Reggans. But Reggans is not playing
football in his senior season. Even so, look for the Kangs to be a more
disciplined and polished team. They are back on track. On the down side after
three years of strong teams,
Eastlake
will be rebuilding this season. The Wolves still have one of the leagues best
coaching staffs and they may surprise a few opponents later in the season.
Juanita is still suffering as a program. The promise of last season has
fizzled into big concern for the Rebel program. The small turn out at the
Sophomore level has to be a big concern for the staff, however they still boast
top recruit LB Walter Winter. Thank heavens the Rebels have both Franklin and
Roosevelt on the schedule.
Franklin
will continue to suffer in football until they can put the same emphasis behind
their football program that they give to round ball. The Quakers will again
have trouble with everyone on their schedule including
color:black">Roosevelt
font-family:Verdana;color:black">. After a huge ending to their 2002 season,
the Riders have once again suffered from a tragedy that has to be a huge
distraction. Can TE Taylor Argens and comapny regroup in time to open with
Franklin
and keep the momentum going ?? It won’t matter. The week one contest will only
decide who stays out of the Kingco basement in 2004.
Sleeper
player in the Kingco 4A?
font-family:Verdana;color:black">Bothell QB Tony Gardiner. Playing in the same
league with Tuiasosopo, Morgan and Staudacher will allow Gardiner to sneak under
the radar of most fans. But he logged some serious duty during last season when
all-league QB Rocky Jorgensen was injured. Gardiner has an accurate touch and a
strong arm. He also has arguably the best set of starting receivers in the
state. If the Bothell passing game is in sync, look for Gardiner to get some
serious attention this fall.
Sleeper
team?
color:black">Inglemoor. I don’t know how a Frank Naish team could be called a
sleeper but, with all eyes on Ballard, Bothell and Woodinville, the Vikings have
the best shot to sneak under the radar and grab a playoff spot. “Son of
Sleeper” has to be
Garfield. The
Bulldogs are quietly turning their program around. Look for them to be better
in each of the next two seasons and a contender in 2006.
Toughest
2003 schedule?
color:black">With the eleven team schedule, this is a tough one to call. On the
outside it would appear that
Franklin has the
honors with games against not only the big 5 (Ballard, Bothell, Woodinville,
Inglemoor and Redmond) but also
font-family:Verdana;color:black">Rainier
Beach in week four. But on the other hand the Quakers might have trouble with
any 9 week schedule. Among the big FIVE, Bothell takes honors for the second
year in a row. Not only do they open with Inglemoor and Redmond, but in a
stretch of three weeks they face ….. Wesco contender Lake Stevens, Ballard at
Memorial and Woodinville at Pop Keeney. If they survive all that, the last two
weeks will be like a retreat in the Bahamas prior to the playoffs.
