We meet many Coaches in the game we are in. There are some great programs out there and usually behind every one of them is a great person driving the bus in the form of a Coach.
Liberty football coach Steve Valach is one of those guys. This week he was named the Seattle Seahawks High School Coach of the Year.
Coach Valach was given his award at half time of the Seahawks' game against San Francisco last Sunday.
He was honored with a Trophy and even nicer a check for his Program. The Seahawks gave him a check for $2,000 to recognize his effort.
Fact is we have been getting to know Valach quite a lot the last few days. He was the first Coach to respond to our request to have injured Highland High QB Matthew Newman recognized in the Tacoma Dome. Something that the WIAA was not able to do.
The Patriot's team and families have become very involved with Newman and the campaign to get him support recognition for his efforts to return to a normal life.
Valach took his boys to a 12-2 record and beat powerhouse Lakes in a come from behind win in the Semi-Final. The team went on to have a chance to beat Bellevue before coming up just short this past week. What a great run they had.
"It was a great year. I could not have asked for anything more. The boys had a theme this year of "One". To play as One and to try and be One in all they did. I can say with confidence that they made that Goal," said Coach calmly.
He called us Sunday to ask for directions to Seattle Childrens Hospital. He went by to see Matthew and deliver some signed team posters from the Patriots. He told us about taking his son to the Seahawk's game but not the award. Humble guy to the end.
Great job Coach! You have a wonderful program and group of young men and it shows on and off the field. We are very glad that all your efforts were recognized in this way.
Best of luck to you and the Team in the future. You are a class act.
Here is a touching moment captured at the Tacoma Dome by Bryan Levesque of GSHLfootball.com of the Liberty Patriots Raising 7 for Matthew Newman...the recognition that many of his family and supporters had hoped to see. Thanks Boys!
You will never know how much that meant. Have a great Holidays!
