Teams
1.
White River
Coach: Kevin McNulty
Returning state participants: Zach Stover, 103; Paul Klein, 112; J.J.
Westover, 119; Kyle Morrow, 125; Sean McNulty, 135; Miles Kilcup, 160; Dustin
Haukenberry, 171; Brad Padgett, 171; Brannon Gale, 275.
How they can win it: This could be the year
White River does it. They have a great mix of state
champs and emerging talent.
Why they won’t win it: This is a young team. Six of their returning
wrestlers were freshman and sophomores. To be honest I think if they take care
of business they could be untouchable.
2. Sedro-Woolley
Coach: Jay Breckenridge
Returning state participants: Nathan Decker, 103; Zack Olson, 119;
Patrick O’Neil, 125; Tanner McCoy, 140; Patrick Janicki, 145; Steven Scott, 215.
How they can win it: They have tradition and the ability to produce
quality wrestlers. Maybe the return of Devin Knight will help them.
Why they won’t win it:
White River may have too much. Sedro also only has 2
returning placers.
3. Squalicum
Coach: Mark Parrish
Returning state participants: Jason Costello, 103; Jace Cutrer, 125;
Brett O’Brien, 130; Mason Webb, 135; Nick Webb, 140; Gabe Rader, 160; Hans
Abbott, 275.
How they can win it: They have 4 state placers on the roster of a team
that has strong senior class. They also are looking to finally knock off Sedro-Woolley
in Region 1.
Why they won’t win it: They may just not have the firepower to beat
White River. They will need to have a large number of
wrestlers wrestler at their best. Â
4. Clarkston
Coach: Dan Randles
Returning state participants: Jason Fairley, 103; James Standifer, 112;
Mike McPeak, 130; Colt Heger, 135; Bandy Earl, 140; Ty Aiken, 160; Travis
Hagen,
171
How they can win it: They have 7 returning wrestlers. They have been
making steady improvement over the last couple of years.
Why they won’t win it: They may not have the finalists to win it all. Â
5. Clover Park
Coach: Darrell White
Returning state participants: Jeremy Wilson, 103; Jake
Amadeo, 112; Adam
Martinez,
119; Matt Roll, 125; Omar Petty, 152; Cliff Reader, 215.
Details, details, details: They have 6 returning wrestlers but only one
placer. They have made great improvement since White has taken over. They could
be even better in the next couple of years.Â
6.
Aberdeen
Coach:
Ken Ashlock
Returning state participants: Dayvin Knemeyer, 103; Jeff Hatton, 125;
Cole Martin, 160.
Details, details, details: They have three wrestlers that could place
high at state. They are also a program that has improved over the years.
7.
Liberty-Issaquah
Coach: Stark Porter
Returning state participants: B.J. Ward, 140; Brad Williams, 145; Justin
Studer, 152.
Details, details, details: They have 2 finalists back. That is enough
points to maybe put them in the top 10. Â
8. Peninsula
Coach: Chris Turner
Returning state participants: Grant Baker, 103; Tony Underwood, 125; Nate
Hove,
135; Andrew Underwood, 135.Â
Details, details, details: The Underwoods could be tough. Region 2 could
be the toughest in the state this year.Â
9. Yelm
Coach: Gaylord
Strand
Returning state participants: Brandon Virgil, 112; Joe Brown, 119; Kyle
Fisher, 125; Joe Nomenson, 152; David Pichler, 171.
Details, details, details: This is another team that could surprise.Â
10.
Ferndale
Coach: Nate Button
Returning state participants: Cody Leifert, 160; Chet Slevin-189.
Details, details, details: This is a program with a strong tradition and
good coaching. Slevin also makes them a threat.
Individuals (Top 5 or 6)
Note: The weight-class rankings are based on where
wrestlers are projected to wrestle for the upcoming season. Many different
issues could cause wrestlers to wrestle at different weights than is projected
right now. Those will be adjusted for regular-season rankings.
103
1. Jason Fairley, Clarkston
2. Nathan Decker, Sedro-Woolley
3. Jason Costello, Squalicum
4. Steve Sanchez, Sunnyside
5. Dayvin Knemeyer, Aberdeen
6. Tyson Metz, Anacortes
Fairley and Decker are both probably going to go up in weight. Costello has had
a couple of good matches with Decker.
112
1. Juan Ortiz, Burlington
2. Vinh Tran, Highline
3. David Howard, Cedarcrest
4. Andy Austreng,Kelso
5. Desean Willis, Lakes
6. Jake Amadeo, Clover Park
Howard is the wildcard here. As a
freshman he came ahead of Ortiz at regions. In truth the top four here are
interchangeable. Â
119
1. Brandon Shetlin, North Thurston
2. Manuel Plata, Prosser
3. Matt Haas, Mt. Si
4. Zack Olson, Sedro-Woolley
5. J.J.
Westover, White
River
6. Patrick O’Neil, Sedro-Woolley
This weight last year surprised me.
Shetlin beat Morgan who looked like one of the top 119's in all the
classifications. The Sedro-Woolley pair will be keys for their team's chances.Â
125
1. Paul
Klein, White
River
2. Matt
Roll, Clover
Park
3. Jeff Hatton, Aberdeen
4. Johnny Hurtado, Prosser
5. Tony Underwood, Peninsula
6. Kyle
Morrow, White
River
Klein and Roll will probably be very
sick of each other by the end of the year if they end up in the same weight.
Hatton is a quality wrestler who could also win it all.
130
1. Brandon Stich, Kelso
2. Mike McPeak, Clarkston
3. Sammy Macias, Wapato
4. Danny Hansen, Timberline
5. Brett O’Brien, Squalicum
6. Brian McCarver, Franklin Pierce
Stich is coming off a great off
season. He will be tough to beat. I expect O’Brien to improve on his performance
from last year.
135
1. Colt Heger, Clarkston
2. Ryan Woodson, North Thurston
3. Andrew Underwood, Peninsula
4. Sean
McNulty, White
River
5. Mason Webb, Squalicum
6. Peter Wenke, Anacortes
This weight is up for grabs. The top
five are almost all at the same level.
140
1. B.J. Ward, Liberty-Issaquah
2. Coby Jones, Burlington-Edison
3. Nick Webb, Squalicum
4. Blake Willard, Franklin Pierce
5. Casey Rice, Highline
6. Tali Talakai, Chief Sealth
There isn’t any real difference
between the top 3. Jones and Webb have developed a real rivalry last year. They
could also end up getting very sick of each other. Ward came out of the region
as a #4. That is a very rare achievement. Â
145
1. Kyle
Bounds, Columbia
River
2. Brad Rasmussen, Cheney
3. Patrick Janicki, Sedro-Woolley
4. Levi Brearley, Bellingham
5. Brad Williams, Liberty-Issaquah
6. Nikko Listek, Camas
Bounds is not only one of the top
wrestlers in the state, he is also one of the top wrestlers in the nation, at
least in Greco. Janicki could be a real surprise this year. He comes from a
family with a long history of producing wrestlers.Â
152
1. Justin Studer, Liberty-Issaquah
2. Tony Dorwand, Mt.
Rainier
3. Jake Freidman, Peninsula
4. Joe Nomenson, Yelm
5. Omar
Petty, Clover
Park
6. Richard Copsey, Camas
I think Dorwand has the ability to
beat Bounds. I hope he comes in to the season healthy. Studer will also be
tough. Freidman could also end up on top.
160
1. Cole Martin, Aberdeen
2. Cody Leifiet, Ferndale
3. Ty Aiken, Clarkston
4. Miles
Kilcup, White
River
5. John
Dixon, Mercer
Island
6. Gabe Rader, Squalicum
This weight lost a ton of talent.
Martin is the only returning placer. This is pretty much an open weight class.
171
1.
Dustin
Haukenberry, White
River
2. D.J. Daniels, Mark Morris
3. David Pichler, Yelm
4. Travis Hagen, Clarkston
5. Leroy Shannon, Washougal
Haukenberry is a big favorite here.
I would be surprised if he doesn’t win it this year.
189
1. Chet Slevin, Ferndale
2. Brad
Padgett, White
River
3. Nick Vlahos, Bellingham
4. Victor Vargas, Centralia
5. Gabe Lara, Sunnyside
I have the feeling that Slevin will
end up at 215. I put Padgett at 189 because I didn’t think Padgett and
Haukenberry would be at the same weight.
White River has a similar situation as Vashon. They both
have quality wrestlers who could be at the same weights. Padget looks like a
future champ.
215
1. Kevin Lind, Fife
2. Cliff
Reader, Clover
Park
3. Steven Scott, Sedro-Woolley
4. Lewis Bryon, West Seattle
Outside of 275 in 4A there isn’t a
more open weight class in the state. Maybe Vlahos will end up here. That being
said 215 almost always ends up with quality wrestlers.
275
1. Tim Sommer, Anacortes
2. Stephen Westfall, Cheney
3. Phil Hayes, O’Dea
4. Hans Abbott, Squalicum
5. Brannon
Gale, White
River
Sommer is favored here but both
Westfall and Hayes could be up there. Hayes is also a top recruit in football.
